Trinity College kicked off their 2020 inter-school rugby season on a winning note when they beat their brother school S. Thomas College by 17 points (three tries, one conversion) to 8 points (one try, one penalty) at the Pallekelle Rugby Stadium yesterday.
At the short breather, it was the Thomians who led 8/7.
It was a game full of errors where knock ons, forward passes and high tackles were constantly occurring. The referee had a field day with seven yellow cards distributed in total for both teams. Both teams played well in patches but ball handling was far below expected standards.
For Trinity Rahul Danaraj, Dulara Alawattegama and Ruvshan Pananwela played well. For the Thomians, skipper Revan Abeywardena and Mohamed Ishak played their hearts out.
Thomians drew first blood in the sixth minute through Yapa’s try. Trinity split many scoring chances through Shyam Robinson, with Harsha Samarasinghe knocking the golden ball. Thomians went further ahead through a penalty by Yan de Soysa. Trinity scored on the stroke of half time through Aasiri Kodituwakku. Thamoditha Dodanwatte converted to take the short breather with a 1 point deficit.
After the turnaround, it was all Trinity as the Thomians not only ran out of steam but also looked very poor in fitness levels. Lanky Rahul Danaraj and Dulara Alawattegama scored one try each in the later half. Trinitians could have gone for a fourth bonus point try but Koojana Kulatunge dropped the ball on the line to miss out on a bonus point win.
