Seenigama CC, Navy SC and the A teams of Army SC and Air Force SC won their respective matches on the opening day of the Women’s Inter-Club Division I (50-over) tournament yesterday.
Kaveesha Dilhari and Piumi Wathsala struck half-centuries and shared an unbroken stand of 130 for the sixth wicket for Seenigama CC in their 93-run win over Chilaw Marians CC at the R. Premadasa Stadium for whom national captain Chamari Athapaththu was the lone stand out player with a hard hit 66 off 54 balls (10 fours, 3 sixes).
Kaveesha followed her fine batting performance with a bowling spell of four wickets for 39 runs of off-breaks supported by the left-arm spin of Sachini Nisansala (4/41). Kaveesha was left nine short of a splendid century finishing on 91* off 75 balls (12 fours) while Piumi’s half-century which was slow in comparison came off 66 balls (3 fours).
Ex Sri Lanka cricketer Chamari Polgampola came up with a splendid all-round performance (82 and 3/8) to help Air Force SC A post 272-7 and beat Army SC B by 191 runs at Katunayake. Chamari and current player Oshadi Ranasinghe struck powerful 50s – Chamari 12 fours in her score of 82 off 102 balls and Oshadi 10 fours in her contribution of 71 off 61 balls.
Former Sri Lanka Women cricketer Hansima Karunaratne struck a fine century off 123 balls (11 fours) and shared a 110-run stand with another ex-Sri Lanka cap Prasadani Weerakkody (38) for Navy SC to total 251-5 and beat Air Force SC B by 178 runs at Welisara.
Ganesha Chamari spun Army SC A to a comfortable nine wickets win over Colts CC at Panagoda. Ganesha’s off-breaks proved too much for a hapless Colts side who were shot out for 45 with Ganesh ending up with exceptional figures of 6 for 7. Army A reached the required target off 14 overs. (ST)
