World Rugby officials to visit Sri Lanka on 4 July

World Rugby Officials from Dublin, Ireland will visit Sri Lanka on 4 July in order to meet the officials of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), Ministry of Sports and National Olympic Committee (NOC) head which will take place in Colombo.

International Relations Chief and World Rugby Participation Officer David Carrigy and the WR Regional Partnership Manager Riszal Saat is supposed to visit Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) membership which was suspended in May 2023 and the WR will have meetings to reinstate the country’s membership in the near future.

 SLR was initially suspended in April 2023 without citing proper reasons and then Asia Rugby (AR) followed by banning Sri Lanka. This ended the national team to participate under NOC flag at the Asia Rugby Sevens in Dubai after missing out on the Korean leg. Later SLR took to Court of Appeal in late April 2023. The minister appointed a stabilisation committee and they are yet to kick off the ball.

The two WR officials will meet all stakeholders in order to recognise SLR, who is already acknowledged by the NOC, as the duly elected governing body. (SJ)
