Zahira Mawanella’s Qatar OBA holds inaugural Niyas A Majeed Memorial Trophy Cricket Tournament

Zahira College Mawanella Qatar OBA held its inaugural Inter-Zahirians cricket tournament on Friday at the MIC Sports Complex from 7.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

The trophy has been named after Niyas A Majeed, the former Zahira school teacher turned politician of Mawanella, who is highly regarded as an honest social activist of his time. 

The tournament consisted of five teams. Four named in the similar manner to the existing house structure at Zahira College Mawanella and the team from the executive committee. Cordowa, Al Zahra, Nizamiya, AL Azhar and the EXCO teams competed in a league style competition in a ten-match league.

A special match was played between the old Zahirians and Old Baduriyas at 5.00 p.m. during the course of the tournament. The Sha Aashif Trophy was named after a young talented Zahirian cricketer who lost his life at a very young age. The trophy was won by the Old Baduriyans beating the Old Zahirians in a thrilling game of cricket. The final was played between the Al Zahra team and Al Azhar. The Al Zahra team was crowned champions of the Niyas A Majeed Memorial Trophy 2019.

Man of the Final – Muhammed Mafaz 

Man of the Series – Muhammed Mafaz

Best Bowler – Muhammed Arshad

Best Batsman – Mohammed Aflal



Commenting about the objectives of the tournament, Zahira OBA Qatar President Mohammed Lafir said: “We have started this tournament for the first time for the members in this scale to engage and improve the cordial relationship among the Zahirians in Qatar. This also carries a noble objective of creating a base fund for the ‘Touching Hearts’ scholarship program initiated by the Zahirians for the needy children of mother Zahira. I thank all the members for their active participation in this tournament and we would like to thank the old Baduriyans in Qatar for their support and specially our sponsors as well.”

The members of Qatar OBA, the Old Baduriyans in Qatar, their families and a large number of community members gathered to witness the matches.
