The word triumvirate is taken from Ancient Rome denoting a group of three jointly sharing interest and responsibility. ‘Triumvirate 2013’ is the title given to the inaugural triangular regatta involving three leading schools in Colombo.
Gateway College will be joining hands with Bishop’s College and Asian International School at this Regatta to be worked off at the Colombo Rowing Club on Sunday 7 July commencing at 2 p.m. The event will be sponsored by Bharti Airtel Lanka, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa.
The sport of rowing has been growing in popularity in the recent past and is now pursued with much interest among school children in Sri Lanka. It is a sport that is grueling yet graceful which instills a work ethic anchored in self discipline. Leading Universities in the world afford the highest respect to this sport due to the sterling qualities it inculcates in those who follow it passionately. Thus it is not surprising that these schools have invested in their own boats and equipment to afford an opportunity for their students to engage in the sport freely.
This regatta will be a unique event in that it signals collaboration between a leading private girl’s school and two leading International schools in the country. It will probably be the first time that both girls and boys will be competing in a friendly interschool regatta of this nature. The obvious intention of this joint venture is to strengthen bonds between the schools which share common values, foster friendship among students and promote the sport of rowing at schools level.
The regatta will comprise of two single sculling events, one double sculling event and a boat race (coxed four) separately for both boys and girls. The races involving girls will see all three schools taking part while the boy’s events will be between AIS and Gateway College.
Airtel Lanka made its foray into the field of sports sponsorships through its associations with sports such as rugby, tennis, basketball, golf and rowing. The company has deepened its commitment towards development of sports especially rowing through its various partnerships which includes being the official sponsor of the Royal-Thomian Regatta and the National Rowing Championships.
While Airtel Lanka continues to be involved beyond just a mere investment with all its sports sponsorships stakeholders, it is committed to developing local talent to international standards, thus fostering sports to new heights.
The spirit in which this regatta has been thought of and the commitment with which it has been executed will surely mean that Triumvirate 2013 will be a great success.
This triangular regatta will no doubt become an annual event that will be much looked forward to in the Colombo rowing calendar in the years to come.
