Alain Gyi wins Pin Fernando Trophy 2014

Alain Gyi playing off a 4 handicap won the Pin Fernando Trophy yet again, in convincing fashion defeating Ramesh Carvalho 4 and 3 in the final. The ever popular annual fixture, the Pin Fernando  Trophy attracted 126 players who vied for 16 slots in the qualifier round and the ‘man-to-man’, knock-out match-play format created much hype with the top qualifier Marc Twerenbold playing off a 12 handicap getting beaten in the pre quarterfinal round by Milinda Ratnayake the 16th qualifier. However Marc received the best qualifier prize with a net 67, one stroke ahead of Chandana Weerasinghe and Ramesh Carvalho who qualified in 2nd and 3rd spot respectively based on a better back-nine count back as they were tied on net 68. Chandana Weerasinghe too could not reach the Quarterfinal losing to Mahendra Jayasekara 1-up.In contrast the 3rd placed qualifier Ramesh Carvalho had a dream run reaching the final beating Dayananda Ukwatte, Gihan Wickramasinghe and Kamelesh Johnpillai to meet seasoned veteran Alain Gyi in the final. Alain Gyi a previous winner of the Pin Fernando Trophy was the 13th qualifier for the match play segment and with his experience overcame C.Hettiarachchi, Rajiv Rajapakse, Suren Vaas 5 and 3 in the semi final and convincingly beat Ramesh Carvalho 4 and 3 in the final. The final played at the RCGC course on Sunday afternoon in wonderful weather was refereed by RCGC professional Tissa Chandradasa. Alain Gyi dominated the final from the start and stamped his reputation as an excellent match player. The RCGC ladies Captain Myungock Jane Hong displayed her competitive ability in match play and comfortably defeated young Iman Sangani 4 and 2 in the final to win the Pam Fernando Trophy 2014. Michele Mirchandani the number 1 qualifier for the Pam Fernando Trophy bowed out to Loise Parson 3 and 1 in the Quarterfinal while Kishani Vethavinayakam the number 2 qualifier defeated the evergreen Swen Selvaratnam  on the 23rd sudden death hole in the quarter-final only to be defeated by the eventual winner Jane Hong 2 & 1 in the semi final. The Mercurial Korean Lady Captain of the RCGC , displayed great match-play qualities defeating Fran De Mel 3 and 2 in the pre Quarter Final, Ruani Desinghe in the Quarter final and Kishani 2 and 1 in the Semi Final. The Ladies final was refereed by senior Pro Anura Rohana and registered a convincing victory for the RCGC lady Captain Myungock Jane Hong. The awards were distributed in an entertaining ceremony at Playtrix Sports Bar and Restaurant at the CR and FC with the compliments of UTE the sponsors of the annual Pin & Pam Fernando Trophy tournament conducted by the RCGC.
