All set for ‘I am Sri Lankan – Play for Peace Cup’ by PPA of Zahira College

The Past Prefects Association (PPA) of Zahira College, Colombo will organise the Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7s for the ninth consecutive year on Saturday 26 October 2013 from 8:30 a.m. onwards at the College grounds in Maradana. This is an inter-school invitational seven a side football tournament approved by the Ministry of Education and recommended by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association. The PPA of Zahira College, Colombo was inaugurated in October 2003 and this year the Association will celebrate a decade of service to the College and society. In recognition of this milestone, the organisers will play the tournament with the theme ‘I am Sri Lankan – Play for Peace Cup’. The organising committee has identified the importance of brotherhood and promoting peace and harmony within all religions and communities at school level and beyond. Many ‘I am Sri Lankan – Play for Peace Cup’ activities will take place on the day of the tournament among participating team players. The launch ceremony of the Peace Cup symbolised the very values the PPA of Zahira College want to promote and religious dignitaries of all four faiths in Sri Lanka invoked blessings and took part in a unique show of a palm imprint. This year, the participating schools will comprise teams from the north (Jaffna), the south (Matara), the east (Trinco) and the west (Colombo). The first round of the tournament will be conducted on a league basis in four groups. Based on placing in the first round, the teams will be drawn into four categories in the second round cup, plate, bowl and shield championship. The cup winners will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, with total cash rewards and awards worth over Rs. 500,000 on offer to participants. This is also the first soccer tournament in the country which offers such cash prizes and awards at schools level. The participating schools are Ananda College, Al Aqsa College Kinniya, D.S. Senanayake College, De Mazenod College Kandana, Hindu College Bambalapitiya, Holy Cross College Kalutara, Isipathana College, Manippai Hindu College Jaffna, Maris Stella College Negombo, St. Benedict’s College, St. Joseph’s College, St. Mary’s College Kegalle, St. Thomas College Matara, Wesley College, Zahira College Colombo and Zahira College Mawanella.
