Amrith and Qin win SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic

Amrith de Soysa of Sri Lanka and Qin Ami of Pakistan won the men’s and women’s trophies at the SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic, which was worked off at the Victoria Golf Course in Rajawella recently The competition was organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by SriLankan Airlines. Nearly 200 golfers entered the fray on the first day, with 60 golfers left competing on the second. They arrived from 18 countries, with China yielding a particularly large contingent. The talented De Soysa, who won the club championship at Nuwara Eliya last year and followed it up with the RCGS Championship this year, came up with an excellent gross score of 74, to clinch the prestigious title. He had a commanding eight-shot lead over second place Jessy Dexten who finished with 66. Young Pakistani Qin Ami returned a gross score of 52 to lift the ladies title. She was in fine form throughout the two rounds she played. She had a commanding 16-point lead over the second place Chinese Xu Dan who made 36. There was a tie for the third spot with England’s Patricia Rogers and expatriate Pauline Morley getting 35 each, but on a count back on the last 18 holes the former was ahead. Shamara Wettimuny got 32 and Manori Jayakody scored 31. Meanwhile, Petra Mohard registered 29, Ahalya Rajan 28, Mora Magadelana 25, Sonia Boyle 21 and Kumari Herath 20. Pauline Morley of the UK, now a resident of Kundasale, won the Ladies ‘A’ Division title with a net score of 73 playing to a handicap of 20. Jayakody who made 68 net, played to a handicap of 19 to finish runner-up. Qin Ami got 69 and her handicap was nine. The other good scores were Xu Dan 69 (15), Patricia Rodgers 54 (11), Kumari Herath 52 (19) and Sonia Boyle also 52 (19). The Division ‘B’ competition for ladies was won by Wettimuny with a net score of 75 playing to a handicap of 25. Finishing runner-up was Ahalya Rajan 72 net with her handicap being 26. The other scores were Petra Mohard with 71 (21), Mora Magadelena 69 (25), Irene Scarth 54 (26), Santnam Kaur 48 (26), Reddy Rama 48 (26), Klauhing Madhogogianmi 47 (33), Jyoti Haynes 44 (23), Indira Tibblins 42 (20). Fazeel Mohamed was the winner of the men’s ‘C’ Division Championship with a net score of 87, playing to a handicap of 26. Occupying the runner-up berth was G. Sriharan with 74 net playing to a handicap of 27. S. Mylventhan registered 63 (26) points while Ali Jafferjee scored 63 (21), Arun Thaper 63 (24), Amal Silva 65 (24). Marce Chicano with a net score of 78 playing to a handicap of 15 edged out Lu Ling from China on a count back to win the men’s ‘B’ Division title. In the field of play both golfers made equal scores of 78 but in the count back on the last nine holes Chicano was slightly ahead. Also making a good impact were Yao Fei 76 (15), Sathis Balasubramaniam 72 (20), Gurabay Singh 67 (18), Scott Wanigasekera 64 (18), Nimal Keppetipola 61 (15), Hanasiri Subhasinghe 60 (19).
