It was a special moment in the lives of 100 needy children from the St. Anthony’s School Mount Lavinia, the Dehiwala Tamil MV and Dehiwala Methodist School. They never expected Sri Lankan cricket captain Angelo Mathews, accompanied by his wife Heshani and Fouzul Hameed, to walk into their school and gift them with school bags, shoes, water bottles, lunch boxes, stationary and other essential items for the forthcoming academic year. The gifts were all from the Angelo Mathews Foundation.
“I have almost always been away from home these past few Christmases and therefore wanted to do something meaningful this festive season. The joy I got after seeing the smiles on these faces is immeasurable. I will remember this for a long, long time”, Mathews, who is also a Trustee of the My Friend Project, said.
Principal of the Dehiwala Tamil MV S. Murali thanked Angelo for coming to his school. “It is an honour to have an international sportsman of his calibre mix with our children”. Principal of the Dehiwala Methodist College Himali Pradeepa said: “We have a lot of orphans in our school. We sincerely thank Angelo and Fouzul Hameed for initiating a project of this nature during the season.”
Principal of St. Anthony’s School D. Jayaratne said: “With Christmas being the season of giving, this laudable initiative made the several underprivileged children of my school very happy.”
Managing Director of the Hameedia Group and Chairman of the My Friend Project Fouzul Hameed said: “This project was launched with the intention of bringing about a significant change in lives of the little children around us. We see a lot of indulgence and wastage taking place around us. We aim to channel at least a small percentage of that towards the betterment of the less fortunate, not only during Christmas, but every day of the year.”
The general public can also rally round and be a vital of this noble project. Those interested in making financial donations can do so to the ‘My Friend Project’ – Account No: 1110031987, Commercial Bank – Colpetty branch.
