KARACHI, Pakistan: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif this morning. Diplomatic breakthrough? A possible thaw in ties?
It’s too early to tell, but at least there was cricket to discuss.
In a statement on Twitter, Modi said he conveyed “best wishes” to the Pakistani prime minister for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, as well as to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The tournament starts on Saturday and Pakistan will face India in the two nations’ opening match on Sunday.
“Cricket connects people in our region and promotes goodwill,” Modi said in another tweet. “Hope players from SAARC [South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] region play with passion & bring laurels to the region.” (Source: http://blogs.wsj.com/)
