Apparel factories dominate Mercantile Volleyball Tournament

Apparel factories dominated this year’s Mercantile Volleyball Tournament conducted by the Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka recently at the National Youth Centre courts in Maharagama. Super League     Hasantha Perera from Textured Jersey Lanka Plc emerged the Most Outstanding Player at the tournament which was held in three categories:Super League, Championship and Division A. Winning the Super League (Men) was Textured Jersey Lanka Plc, who beat Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd. Welisara. In third place was Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd. Minuwangoda. Hasantha Perera (TJ) was the Most Outstanding Player with Smeda Champika from Brandix and Asanka Sujeewa (TJ) ) becoming the Best Spiker and Best Setter respectively. The Women’s Super League was won by MAS Intimates Casualline Mawathagama with Brandix Intimate Apparel Minuwangoda becoming runners-up. The Brandix Intimate Apparel Welisara team was third. Winning all three player awards were MAS Intimates’ Shiromi Mendis (Most Outstanding Player), Thilini Wasana (Best Spiker) and Nisanka Sadamali (Best Setter). The Men’s Championship was won by SLT Human Capital Solution, who beat Brandix Essentials Ratmalana. Brandix Intimate Apparel Polonnaruwa was third. Thisura Lakshan (SLT HC)  was named the Most Outstanding Player while Kasun Dilan  (SLT HC) was the Best Spiker and Pubudu Madusanka (SLT HC) emerged as the Best Setter. Brandix Uknits Mirigama won the Women’s Championship with MAS Casualline Mawathagama becoming runners-up.  MAS Unichela Ltd.- Linea Clothing Pallekelle was third. Chapa (Brandix) was the Most Outstanding Player, Kasuni Tharuka (Brandix) was the Best Spiker and Sureka (Brandix) became the Best Setter. The Men’s A Division was won by VTA Holdings Ltd., who beating MAS Active - Leisure line, Katunayaka in the final. Quantum Clothing came third.  The Most Outstanding Player was Pathum Sameera (VTA), A. Siriparath (VTA) was the Best Spiker and Sadith Sudarshan (MAS) was the Best Setter. The Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka (MVA - SL) initiated the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament in 2012 with the prime objective of popularising volleyball within the mercantile sector. The association was established as an affiliated body of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation that year to promote the game in Sri Lanka and to provide an opportunity for private sector employees to take part in this national game. As an attempt to provide an opportunity for the youth in the mercantile sector to engage in extracurricular activities and bring volleyball closer to the hearts of young associates, MVA commenced the Mercantile Tournament.
