Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2012 kicks of next weekend on 13, 14 and 15 July in Arugam Bay, with strong support by Sri Lanka Telecom who comes in as of one of the main sponsors. The surf contest, which is focused on Sri Lankan surfers, is presented by Arugam Bay Beachwear. Arugam Bay Beachwear which also partners and supports Arugam Bay Surf club to promote surfing in the bay area initiated the contest last year to create an identity for surfing in Sri Lanka and also to promote it island-wide.
Sri Lanka provides amazing opportunities for surfers and hence Arugam Bay Surf Classic will be able to provide an effective platform for surfing. Participants from all surfing destinations in Sri Lanka are expected to participate. The contest will be judged by an international panel to give it a standard, which is globally acceptable.
Along with Sri Lanka Telecom which is one of the main sponsors, ONDA is the official surfboard sponsor, Stick It is the official wax sponsor, SOL is the official beverage sponsor, Mydeal.lk is the online partner and Surfing the Nation which works on helping surfers on technical aspects. There is also important support from local businesses and hotels in Arugam Bay, which will be very critical to make this a success. First three best surfers will receive cash prizes and gifts. “The corporates who have come forward this year are actually our partners who play a very crucial role in making this contest a success. We are very thankful to them and we have selected them based on their long term plans which are relevant to the contest,” aays Arugam Bay Beachwear CEO Ajai Singh. Arugam Bay Beachwear, which consistently works in Arugam Bay to support the community, last year, sponsored ten surfers from Arugam Bay to become trained instructors. These instructors are part of Arugam Bay Surf School, making it the only surf school in Sri Lanka, which has trained instructors. The Arugam Bay Surf school is associated with the contest is geared to provide surfing lessons for enthusiasts during the contest.
