AAP: A pair of Australians are among 11 applicants vying to become Sri Lanka’s next cricket coach. Ex-Sydney Thunder coach Shane Duff has put his hand up to replace South African Graham Ford, who has announced he won’t be staying on when his contract expires in January. Duff has prior experience with Sri Lanka’s cricket team, having spent time as their strength and conditioning coach. The other Australian in the hunt is former Victoria coach Michael O’Sullivan. Trevor Bayliss’s assistant during his tenure with the island nation, Paul Farbrace, is among those to have put in an application. Others to apply include former Sri Lanka players Ruwan Kalpage and Marvan Atapattu. A report in Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times newspaper has also named ex-Australia Test captain Greg Chappell as a target, though he is not one of the applicants for the role. A statement by Sri Lanka Cricket on their website said apart from the 11 applicants, other possible targets such as Chappell will be considered for the role. “There were several other interested parties who were deprived of submitting their applications due to time constraints,” the statement reads. “Therefore, it was requested by the Executive Committee to explore the possibility of obtaining applications from the interested parties prior to evaluating the applications received.” No timeframe has been given on when the new coach will be appointed.
