Bad weather proves a dampener for MCA ‘G’ Division 25-Over League Tournament

The weather gods once again spoilt the soup for MCA cricket. The ongoing 7th Honda Trophy ‘G’ Division 25-Over League Tournament 2017, sponsored by Stafford Motor Ltd, was severely hampered during the last weekend, as nine games were washed out without a ball being bowled and seven games were played with reduced overs (a minimum of eight overs should be played by a team for a result to be reached).

In one of the matches that went the full distance, Fair First Insurance (formerly Union Assurance General) made hay in the sunshine as they trounced MAS Active ‘D’ by 143 runs.

Fair First Insurance’s opening batsman Lakshan Perera was most unfortunate to miss out on his second tonne of the tournament. Perera, who earlier made 88 off 62 balls against A. Baur & Co, hit another belligerent 91 in 49 balls, inclusive of 6 sixes and 10 fours which enabled Fair First Insurance to finish with the best team total for the weekend – 235 for 6 in 25 overs. Spinners Mahesh de Alwis (4/14/3) and Isuru Sampath (1.5 /2/4) bowled well in tandem to skittle out MAS Active ‘D’ for a paltry 92 runs in 13.5 overs.

The other notable performance came from Saranga Nadeeshan from CEAT Kelani (75 in 64 balls, 5 sixes and 5 fours against VS Information) and a 115-run stand for the third wicket in 70 balls between Jeevan Prasad (75) and Rukshan Gamage (60) from Group M Media against Alliance Finance.
