The 62nd Badminton Nationals organised by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association will commence today and will continue till 12 October at the Jayatillake Sports Complex in Nawalapitiya.
The Men’s singles championship was won for a record 12th time by Sri Lanka’s badminton captain Niluka Karunaratne of Mc Larens Group.
The defending ladies champion is Lekha Shanthi of Sri Lanka Air Force. Lekha will have a tough time to defend her title with some stiff opposition from Achini Ratnasiri. The former Visakian is a three time National Champion from 2009 to 2011. Last year along with Upuli Weerasinghe she won the women’s doubles championship.
Two shutlers who have gone is the record books since this championship was introduced in 1952 are Niluka Karunaratne and Chandrika de Silva. Niluka Karunaratne has been the men’s singles champion from 2001.
