In the Men’s event for the Pin Fernando Trophy, while Suren Waas enjoyed a rest day having received a walk over from Milinda Ratnayake, the rest of the field jockeying for positions in the semi-final stage were made to toil hard. Seasoned campaigner Alain Gyi drummed up everything he had in reserve including flowers to get past Rajeev Rajapakse at the final hole 1 up. Ramesh Carvalho finally drowned Gihan Wickramasinghe at the 17th 2/1 and Kamlesh Johnpillai was stretched by Mahendra Jayasekera all the way to finally win at the first sudden death extra hole 19th. The Ladies too not to be outdone created a few upsets and records when Louise Parsons eliminated top seed Michele Mirchandani 3/1, young Iman Sangani showed her golfing pedigree with a jewel of a performance and counted out N. Amarasurya who had nothing left to bank on, by 5/4, Lady Captain Jane Hong nurtured her game and conquered her environment with a nerve biting finish over Ruani Desinghe at the final hole. However, the match of the day prize goes to the rising star Kishani Vethvinayakam and the never fading star of yesteryear Suwen Selvaratnam who came back from 3 down after 9 holes to be 1 up going to 17. However, she couldn’t hold on to that lead and the match continued for 5 extra holes before the judgement went in favour of Kishani after Suwen finally went off track hitting the water hazard with her tee-shot. This year United Tractor & Equipment (UTE) has combined with FS CURTIS a leading supplier of Air Compression Equipment to be the sole sponsor of this prestigious annual board event of the historic Royal Colombo Golf Club.
