Blues gun down Colombo to retain Carlton Cup

The HSC Blues basketball club shot their way to the Carlton Cup by beating Colombo BC 79-55 in Saturday’s final, winning the tournament for the second successive time. HSC Blues has now won three Carlton Cups, all of them coming against Colombo BC. Roshan Randima and Marko Latinovic combined to hit 43 points to lead the Blues, while the rest of the Blues scored in double figures including Mithila Abeysekara with 13 points and Sameera Chanaka with 10 points. “The Blues were amazing. Everybody wanted to work hard to keep the championship secure at home. What motivated them was the feeling they got after losing the first two games in the Super 8. I am proud of them and feel very privileged to call them champions,” said Blues Head Coach Prasanna Jayasingha.

 Moratuwa slay Buffaloes with three-point dagger

The Carlton Cup Men’s Division II finals ended thrillingly as Mortuwa BC hit a last-second three-pointer to end the unrelenting challenge of Buffaloes BC ‘Blacks’. The score was tied at 54- heading into the game’s final stretch, when Moratuwa gained possession of the ball and relayed it to their sharpshooter Mohamed Faizal, who knocked down the game-winning three. Moratuwa BC were leading 29-22 at halftime. In all 26 teams took part in the tournament. “This is the fourth championship we earned consecutively over the past couple of years in the club season. These are great moments in my life and we all won this together. I can call this team my family for the rest of my life,” Skipper Nilanga Wickramarathne said.Colombo BC’s best players were Janko Belic and Sudesh Ahamed who both scored 17 points and 12 points respectively. Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, MP Namal Rajapaksa, Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando and Bharti Airtel Lanka CEO Suren Goonewardene graced the event.
