The corporate sector battled it out for top honours for the prestigious Shakspeare Shield sponsored by Carson Cumberbatch PLC, played under new format this year. The qualifying round was based on stableford points format which just concluded. Much exciting knock out stage is to be played in the coming weeks among the teams making the cut based on the stableford points scored.  This is the only golf tournament open to corporates who are employees and/or directors of registered companies, embassies, government departments and service organisations. This year we saw some interesting pairs taking part, Anil and Mahesh Hirdramani of Hirdramani Group, Sumal and Shamal Perera of Access Group, the Softlogic Group fielding three teams Dr. S. Selliah and D. Hettiarchchie, Dr. Manjula Karunaratne and Dihan Dedigama and Ashok Pathirage and Ifthikar Ahamed. The corporates to qualify for the match play segment of the tournament was Nimo & Co Ltd. – Neesha and Suni Nirmalalingam (37 points), Sri Lanka Ports Authority Nihal Keppetipola and Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama (35 points), Sri Lankan Airlines – Damindra Fernando and Milinda Ratnayake (35 points), Carson Cumberbatch PLC – Niloo Jayatilake and Amal Cabraal (34 points), DFCC Bank – Arjun Fernando and Trevin Fernandopulle (32 points), Akbar Brothers – Huzefa Akbarally and Tyaeb Akbarally (32 points), Club Villa – Richel Hameed and S.M.A. Hameed (32 points), and Kay Jay Agencies Ltd. – Kamlesh and Kushal Johnpillai (32 points). The tournament is likely to hot up in the next stage with corporates battling for top honour in the knock out stage commencing. Last year’s winners Kay Jay Agencies Ltd. represented by Kamlesh and Kushal Johnpillai are vying for a win back to back. However many corporates are represented by strong teams and likely to see many upsets in the quarter final to the finals. The competition began in early years of the twentieth century (1911) in honour of W. Shakespeare, a former Chairman of Carsons. The tournament celebrated its centenary year in 2011 and the tournament being one of the most prestigious board events in the annual golfing calendar. The Shakspeare Shield is played at the Royal Colombo Golf Club under the sponsorship of Carson Cumberbatch PLC.
