Carsons celebrates centenary Shakspeare Shield tournament in grand style

Nobles (Pvt) Ltd. emerged winners in one of the most prestigious tournaments of the Royal Colombo Golf Club

3rd October 2011: A fitting celebration to culminate the conclusion of the 100th Golf Tournament of the Shakspeare Shield, played over 17 weeks in a ‘Foursome Match’ format was held recently. The prize distribution and the gala awards ceremony was held in the presence of a large gathering of corporate representatives, past winners and centenary year participants. The past winners of the tournament were felicitated recognizing their achievements at the Shakspeare Shield centenary year celebrations.

The final was keenly contested between brothers Sidath and Nimal Wettimuny of Nobles (Pvt) Ltd. emerged champions over Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abyewickrama and Major General Srinath Rajapakse of the Ministry of Defence, on the 17th hole. The Shakspeare Shield is the only tournament open to RCGC members who are employees and or Directors of registered companies, embassies, government departments and service organizations and to date a popular tournament contested year on year by the corporate sector.

Carson Cumberbatch which was initially incorporated as a Sterling Company in 1871, now a wholly owned Sri Lankan Company supported the game of golf since it was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 1879. Carson’s has been the sponsor in this unbroken partnership with the Royal Colombo Golf Club since 1911.

Mr. Mano Selvanathan, Group Director of Carson Cumberbatch PLC commenting at the prize distribution, “Our organization is committed to be associated with the tournament with the Royal Colombo Golf Club and in honouring the contribution made by Mr. Shakspeare, we will continue to sponsor this event in the years to come”. and proposed a toast  "To the game of Golf, Royal Colombo Golf Club and Walter Shakspeare, the initiator of this prestigious tournament".
