The Ceylon Motor Sports Club celebrated 80 years of motor racing with a gala dinner on the beach in Negombo. The event coincided with the FIA Asia Pacific Forum which was held over the same weekend, presided over by FIA President Jean Todt and attended by delegates of 14 countries all part of the Asia Pacific Region. This was the first time such a forum was held in Sri Lanka.
During the forum the CMSC was showcased for its achievements in Marshal Training and exposure both in Sri Lanka and overseas. The Club has recently been involved in marshalling at the FIA Formula 1 events in India, Singapore and in Australia. The Club is accredited by the FIA Institute for the training of marshals.
On his brief visit to Sri Lanka, Jean Todt also visited the Sri Lanka Karting Circuit in Bandaragama and was very impressed with the overall facility there, and what the facility can do in order to promote karting in Sri Lanka, and beyond.
The 80th anniversary dinner was attended by Jean Todt, the delegates from the Forum and a large number of sporting personalities and well wishers. The Club used the occasion to felicitate two of Sri Lanka’s outstanding drivers, Dilantha Malagamuwa and Dinesh Deheregoda both of whom are now participating in international events.
A fabulous evening was held on the beach at the Jetwing Blue hotel which was the host hotel both for the Forum and the Dinner.
