Chanaka Perera, 19 year old school boy from D.S. Senanayaka College was awarded the Douglas de Silva Scholarship for the Most Promising Young Golfer for 2013-14, at the Royal Colombo Golf Course recently. The award was made jointly by Sri Lanka Golf Union President Lal Dias and Douglas de Silva’s son Dilhan de Silva. This Scholarship was the Brain Child of his two sons Dilhan and Herin de Silva. Douglas de Silva was a keen golfer who was much into charity and helping promising golfers reach the top. Interestingly Timothy de Silva, the duo’s grandfather was the first Sri Lankan amateur to win the local Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship, the world second oldest amateur golf tournament, in 1923. The de Silva Brothers want this to be a catalyst for many more individuals and companies to give more scholarships to young talented golfers who are economically less privileged. This year Chalitha Pushpika, R. Sureshan and Chanaka Perera were the final three to be considered. Finally Chanaka was selected taking into consideration the current handicap and his commitment to the game. Golf affords a carrier for youngsters unlike other sports whereby professional golfers could play in Tournaments and earn prize money in to their 60’s or take to coaching golf.
