One of the leading and oldest rugby clubs in the country, the Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH&FC) will be pulling out of the ongoing inter-club rugby tournament’s second round matches, CH&FC Rugby Chairman Iqbal Hassen told the Daily FT.
Hassen said: “We are finding it tough to continue. Still the SLRFU, although they promised to, has not granted us any funds. Furthermore, the rugby football season and domestic club cricket season are both clashing. This is a major setback for us since our club is involved in cricket as well. The Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) is using the same grounds which our rugby players are using for matches and training. All our overseas players were sent back due to a lack of sponsorship.”
Hassen added: “We will send out an official letter to the SLRFU (Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union) today.
Another club which is finding the going tough is the Hambantota Sharks who are very likely to pull out from the league as well.
Head Coach Nilfer Ibrahim said: “We had nearly 25 players and we’re having our training sessions in Colombo. But unfortunately half of them are nursing injuries and we are also very likely to pull out.” If the club pulls out of the second round the SLRFU will need to take away all points earned and conceded by clubs in their games against the Sharks.
The Sharks have already played Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air force, while CH&FC did not play in the second round. They ended the first round last. This will mean there are seven clubs in the second round.
