Sunday 20 May 2012 saw over 600 associates from Cinnamon Grand Colombo gathered at the BRC Grounds Colombo for the annual cricketing challenge between the hotel’s departments.

A series of 28 fiercely contested matches were played as per the regulation six-a-side, five over basis game. A total of 24 men’s teams and five ladies teams representing 14 departments of the hotel participated for the event.

The spectators of both finals were treated with good performances from all four teams that resulted in all players putting in 200% effort to clinch victory and both games. Angsana Pain Killers the defending champions clinched the men’s title for the third consecutive year by defeating the House Keeping Super Kings. The Front Office Lionesses triumphed by becoming champions in the women’s category by defeating the F&B Avengers.

Upon the conclusion of the tournament the following were adjudged winners for their individual performances respectively.

The trophy for the Man of the Tournament went to Denuka Costa from Housekeeping. Best Batsman and Highest number of sixes was won by Ramesh Peiris from Angsana City Club & Spa. Sukumal Fernando from Angsana City Club & Spa was awarded Best Bowler and Man of the final went to Amila Achellis from Angsana City Club & Spa.

In the women’s category, Woman of the Tournament and Best Batswoman awards went to: Rasika Edirisinghe from F&B. Bavanthika De Silva from Angsana City Club & Spa walked away with the Best Bowler award for her amazing feat on the field.

That’s not all this year’s theme of ‘sustainable cricket’  introduced by the Cinnamon Grand Sports Committee saw associates and departments going green and thinking out of the box, to decorate their tents and even garb their respective cheerleaders!

The best cheerleading team and the best tent were adjudged in keeping with this year’s sustainability theme with departments given a specific budget and guidelines on the need to focus on the three main principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.

The House Keeping Super Kings won the award for the most sustainable tent for their use of recycled material to build ‘a castle tent’ which was turned out with discarded cardboard boxes, used tissue paper boxes and empty apple crates of the hotel.

The Accounts and F&B departments also stood out for their creative sustainability tents with the use of discarded gunny sacks. The accounts team actually turned out in typical village outfits complete with bats turned out with coconut branches to add to the cricket spirit!

The Engineering team’s humorous Hall of Fame tent, had most of the associates in fits of laughter, whilst the Security Team built their own fortress with the Thunder Cats cartoon theme!

The cheerleading competition had both males and females viewing for the title, with the Front Office ‘Lionesses’ (all female) and House Keeping’s ‘Umpires’ (all men) jointly sharing the ‘Best Cheersleaders’ award. The Engineering’s all men- cheerleading team was a hit with their self-sustained recycled ‘tube lights’ costumes.

A day of great cricket, good food and great camaraderie amongst the associates and teams saw the Cinnamon spirit at its best in a memorable interdepartmental cricket competition for Cinnamon Grand.
