By David Ebert The Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo Annual Open Tennis Championship 2014 will kick off on 21 May for the seventh time with the finals scheduled for 5 June. This is the third consecutive year that the tournament will be endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association and featured in their annual calendar of tennis events. The tournament will be open to all tennis enthusiasts with individual categories for both boys and girls from under 10 to under 16. The adult events scheduled will be the Men’s Open and Women’s Open in both singles and doubles categories. Participants will vie for both trophies and cash prizes which will be awarded at the conclusion of the tournament on 5 May. Elaborating on the upcoming tournament, Cinnamon Lakeside General Manager Dennis Gruhier said: “The Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo Open Tennis Tournament is the only tennis championship in Sri Lanka successfully conducted by a five star hotel and at a competitive level that is supported by the SLTA. WE at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo are proud to be staging this annual event and through the expert services of the hotel’s Health & Fitness Centre along with the help of our generous sponsors, we are dedicated to maintaining it at the highest standard so that the country’s players, both juniors and veterans, can perform at their best.” The event is sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, with the core sponsor being Third Generation Sports who will be providing all the required tennis balls used during the duration of the tournament as well as tennis equipment as gifts. In addition, tickets for domestic flights from Cinnamon Air will also be on offer for the winners, while MAS Active will be the official clothing sponsor. The tournament has in its seven years has attracted quite a following already with over 300 entries received last year, while over 400 are expected to apply this time around.  Sponsors Standard Chartered Bank, Sri Lanka General Manager Priority & Preferred Banking/Head of Marketing Naresh Adikaram said: “This is the second year that Standard Chartered Bank has come forward to sponsor an event of this nature and we feel that it is a great platform for new youth talent to showcase their skills. Standard Chartered uses sports to support our sustainability programs and have demonstrated this with sponsorships of a number of sports in Sri Lanka, including rugby, and it is a part of our core to develop youth talent and skills.”
