The oldest Motorsport Club in the country, Ceylon Motor Sports Club has joined hands with Sri Lanka Air Force to organise the Katukurunda Drag Race at the Katukurunda Air Force Base, in Kalutara on 24 August 2014. A drag race is an acceleration contest from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance. The distance being 375 m these contests are started by means of an electronic device commonly called a ‘Christmas Tree’. Upon leaving the starting line, each contestant races upto the finish line, and slows down to a greatly reduced speed after passing the finish line. Sri Lanka Automobile Sport, the governing body of Motor Sport in Sri Lanka, have given permission to the organisers to conduct the meet, while the organisers too have called for entries,  putting in place the required safety as recommended by the Governing Body. Seat belts, helmets and overalls being mandatory will create the benchmark, while proper scrutinising will be conducted on the cars and bikes to ensure that they are safe to run. Tag Heuer Wireless Electronic timing will be used by the organisers to time the contestants, while the start and finish will have live cameras to ensure competitors do not have false starts as well as monitor photo finishes. One of the unique things about the drag race will be that you have enter a standard car into a class mentioned above, and this car could be your everyday car which is used to go shopping. This would be the third time such an event would be conducted at Katukurunda, and the organisers expect to start the first rounds by 8 a.m. and go on through the day.
