Buzzword Events (Malaysia) will be organising the Colombo Bike Week 2016 in collaboration with Motor Adventure Sports – Sri Lanka from 12-20 March. The event is a motor-biking tour of Sri Lanka for eight nights and nine days with BIG Bikes from Malaysia, visiting key places of tourist interest and using the most exciting biking roads for the riders.

“Sri Lanka has the perfect assets to host foreign riders because of its quality trunk roads, delicious food, exotic hotels and surreal locations. The riding culture in ASEAN (with over 50,000 bikes above 1,000cc) has been well developed over the last 30 years. There are numerous inter country rides covering all areas of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Brunei, Borneo, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam,” said Leslie Tilak Jayawardena, Director and CEO of Buzzword Events based in Malaysia.

“There are many bike festivals and bike weeks on the riding calendar for these riders and they also attract many other foreign riders from Australia, Europe and America to join in. The most popular and biggest Bike Week is the Phuket Bike Week slated for the 13-14 April every year in Phuket, Thailand in conjunction with the Thai New Year and the Water Festival, where 10,000 bikers gather to enjoy a weekend of fellowship, music, charity and partying. India too has started a bike week in Goa called the India Bike Week. We want to do something similar in Sri Lanka to promote Sri Lanka as a great riding destination,” added Jayawardena.

The planned route for the ride is Waskaduwa, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Embilipitiya, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Habarana, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Puttalam and Colombo.

The highlight of the week long ride will be on the final day when the ‘Thunder Roar’ arrives in Colombo on Saturday 19 March to mingle and share handshakes and hugs with local Sri Lankan bikers from local bike clubs at Independence Avenue.

The international style carnival and music concert currently planned for at the Colombo Hilton Hotel grounds will feature food, drinks and artistes such as Sri Lankan rockers BURN, a five-piece Malaysian rock band, custom and antique bikes, tattoo contests, a Sri Lankan fashion show, Miss Colombo Bike Week and stunt bike displays.

“Currently, we have George Stueart Teas as a sponsor. Citrus Vacations Ltd. and Citrus Leisure are our Hospitality, Travel and Ground Logistics Partners for the riders and foreign journalists. The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau extended its assistance last year and will most probably be doing so again,” added Jayawardena.

“We are currently seeking more corporate and Government sponsorship in the telecommunications, banking, FMCG, beverages and insurance industries to make this event a major success and to be part of the national tourism calendar. The media mileage both locally and internationally will be tremendous for Sri Lankan companies.”
