The Colombo Rowing Club (CRC) emerged Champions in the 72nd Amateur Rowing Association of the East-Far East Amateur Rowing Association (ARAE-FEARA) Chinna Creek International Regatta held recently in Karachchi. Teams from Sri Lanka, India, the UAE and Pakistan participated in 41 rowing competitions.
The regatta event featured around 100 contestants making the championship a very competitive and challenging one. This victory which was secured in international waters after a span of 30 years has earned much applause and appreciation in the rowing fraternity.
“The CRC team has done exceptionally well this year and it’s great to see a mixture of past oarsmen and women from many schools coming together and rowing as one. This is mainly because CRC helps them to continue the sport once they leave school,” said Maheel Gamage the captain of the CRC team.
Commenting on the regatta Pakistan Rowing Association (PRA) official Abdul Rahim Babi said: “We are grateful for the tourist teams for coming here when no other international sports team wanted to visit due to the law and order situation in the country.”
In recent times the Colombo Rowing Club (CRC) itself, has been hosting rowing events which are much looked forward to and keenly contested. Since its inception, the Colombo Rowing Club has progressed into one of the most prestigious sports clubs in Sri Lanka. The CRC is the cradle of rowing in Sri Lanka and has been a vital catalyst to what the sport has grown into today. It is indeed noteworthy that many institutions that have taking up rowing over the past several years, including the three armed forces, started the sport at the CRC and have now proceeded to develop their own rowing institutions.
Founded in 1864, The Colombo Rowing Club (commonly known as CRC) is the premier boat club in Sri Lanka. Its clubhouse and boathouse are located on the edge of the northern Beira Lake, at Sir Chittapalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, in Colombo 02. The Club is celebrating its 150th year in 2014. Hence, many additional celebratory events in addition to the regular annual regattas and activities will be featured in this year’s club calendar.
