CR, Kandy and Havies start season with wins

By Shamseer Jaleel      CR & FC, led by Ashan De Costa and coached by Imthisam Marrikar, pulled off a magnificent 21 (1 goal, 1 try, 3 penalties)-15 (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty) win over Sri Lanka Army at the Race Course grounds last evening. At halftime Sri Lanka Army led 15-3. The game was refereed by G. Stuart from Australia. In other matches, Kandy SC, captained by former Sri Lankan fifteens skipper Sean Wijesinghe, stamped their class when they gave a sound warning to all the other clubs in the league with a runaway 78-9 victory over Sri Lankan Air Force. Kandy went on to cross the Airmen’s line 12 times. Kandy will be getting Kenyan Sevens player Oscar Ouma in two days’ time, their fourth overseas player. Kandy are coached by Johan Taylor this season. Havelocks also started off the season on a high note when they pulled away a close 44-28 win over Police with the help of a second-half burst.
