AAP: Test victories, rare as they are, are generally cause for celebration among Bangladesh’s cricket side.
But with the deadly collapse of a Bangladesh garment factory preceding the nation’s fourth test triumph - a 143-run win over Zimbabwe - it was a sombre mood in the Harare dressing rooms this week.
Shane Jurgensen, first appointed Bangladesh’s bowling coach in 2011, has spent more time in the developing nation than most Australians.
The 37-year-old became Bangladesh’s head coach in February and says the disaster has affected the players in different ways.
“After the game, the guys were very subdued,” said Jurgensen.
“It’s a very sad disaster and I know as a team we will be doing something to help the victims and the families.”
Plans are afoot among the squad for some form of charity drive.
“It’s terrible, it really is, and I just cannot imagine the pain families will be feeling,” Jurgensen said.
“I admire the people in Bangladesh because they will do what they can to work and earn money to support their families.
“These people were doing just that - they went to work and many were badly injured and many didn’t come home.”
The death toll from the collapse of a factory building on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has passed 400 and rescuers fear more than 500 have died.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim dedicated his side’s test win to the victims.
Jurgensen’s charges wrap up their tour of the African nation with three one-day clashes and two Twenty20 internationals. The former Queensland paceman said it was important they carried the momentum gained in Harare into Friday’s 50-over match.
“We came under heavy questions about us as a team from a lot of different people but we worked hard and had some honest team discussions and assessments,” Jurgensen said of the turnaround after his side lost the first test.
“We now move to Bulawayo where the conditions will suit us more and this test win will certainly help our confidence.”
