Dharmasoka’s Warusawithana upsets TT national champion Madurangi

Dharmasoka Ambalangoda’s Erandi Warusawithana created a major upset at the All-Island Ranking Table Tennis Tournament – staged last weekend at the Cincinnati Indoor Stadium in Nuwara-Eliya – by beating the national women’s singles champion and Lankan women’s team captain Ishara Madurangi of Sri Lanka Air Force in the open event.
Also featuring in the semi-finals were two promising teenage paddlers Pawani Sirisena from Maliyadeva BV and Muthumali Priyadharshani from Devananda College. Bowing out in the quarterfinals were Chamathsara Fernando of Visakha Vidyalaya, Sheshala Bandara of Mahamaya SC, Tharushi Rodrigo of Mahamaya SC and Buddhipani Rajaguru of Maliyadeva BV. National men’s team skipper and former national champion Rohan Sirisena won the Open Ranking event with a 4-1 win over newcomer Imantha Udanjaya of Sri Lanka Air Force.

Senura Samal (Dudly Senanayake Vidyalaya) beat Ahab Manzil (Trinity College) 2-0 11/8, 11/4.

Savindu Kalhara (Dharmaloka College, Kelaniya) beat Lahiru Munasinghe (Anura Central College, Yakkala) 2-1, 9/11, 11/9, 11/8.
Girls Under 8:
Sarani Ratwatte (Girls high school Kandy) beat Chameesha Thusahari (Kegalu Balika Vidyalaya) 2-1, 11/7, 4/11, 12/10. Girls Under10 Tharani Galagoda (Hilwlood College, Kandy beat Hansani Liyanage (Janadhipathi BV) 2-0 11/4, 11/8.

Isuru Panchali (Holy Cross Kalutura) beat Mihiduni Gunatilleke (Visakha Vidyalaya) 2-0, 11/5, 11/2.
