In an on-going venture to support the local community, DFCC Vardhana Bank, Kalawana donated funds to support upcoming Wushu athlete R.A. Sumudu Namal to attend the 7th Asian Wushu Championship in Manila this August.
Wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. Sumudu, a Grade 10 student at Gamini Madya Maha Vidyla is an athlete with excellent academic results. Sumudu began his competitive Wushu career in 2011 when he received three gold medals in the Under 15 All Island School Competition. This year Sumudu competed to be selected for the under 17 National team to attend the 7th Asian Wushu Championship where he walked away with another three gold medals. With the support of DVB as well, Sumudu will now attend the 7th Asian Wushu Championship as part of the Sri Lankan team that would be competing with some of the world’s up and coming Wushu athletes.
Gamini Madya Maha Vidyla principal E.G. Jayatilaka, stated: “Sumudu is one of the island’s best Wushu students, I am very proud to have one of our highly talented students represent the country; the students and teachers of Gamini Madya Maha Vidyla wish him the best of luck in Manila. I am very glad that DVB is supporting him in his endeavour to become one of the world’s greatest Wushu athletes.”
Sumudu’s coach Prasanna Silva exclaimed: “I haven’t seen such hard work and dedication in a student in a long time. With Sumudu’s hours of practice, I couldn’t see a better candidate to represent our school and Sri Lanka in the Asian Wushu Championship.”
DFCC Vardhana Bank Branch Manager Chandana Weerawardena further added: “Here at DVB we truly believe in supporting our community to reach greater heights. We are extremely proud of Sumudu and wish him the best of luck at the 7th Asian Wushu Championship.”
