Marks the highest ever Sri Lankan climb As a truly Sri Lankan company that embodies the ‘Dare to Dream Spirit’, Expo Freight (EFL), a subsidiary of Expolanka Holdings PLC stepped forward to sponsor the first Sri Lankan Expedition to reach 7500 metres on the South side of Mount Everest. Elmo Francis, professional explorer/climber and the first Sri Lankan to reach the summit Mera Peak in the Himalayas plans to reach the South Col which stands at 7500 metres high on Mount Everest to become the first Sri Lankan to complete this altitude mark. He will thereafter push to reach the 8000 meter mark depending on his physical and the weather conditions at that time. Expolanka Holdings PLC Group CEO/Group Director Hanif Yusoof said, “Elmo’s uncompromising search for excellence, commitment and the brave spirit aligns with our culture of ‘Dare to Do spirit’. An Everest Expedition presents one of the world’s greatest physical and mental challenges. It is wonderful to see a fellow Sri Lankan take on such a feat. As a company EFL has ventured out of Sri Lanka into 18 countries and made our mark. We believe in the great potential of Sri Lankans, we are always ready to encourage the dare to do spirit of our country men and women. Therefore, we are proud to sponsor Elmo’s expedition to the South Col on Mount Everest. We wish him well for the challenging journey.” The South Col is on the main climbing route for Everest from Nepal. It is located on a high snow ridge above advanced base camp. Thanking EFL for the support Elmo Francis said, “South Col is yet another milestone in my journey to climb the Mount Everest summit in 2016. The climbers attached to fixed ropes, climbing up the South Col, is one of the initial steps that will qualify me for the Mount Everest Summit. I am grateful to EFL for their heartfelt support.  I am excited and looking forward for a successful expedition and hoping for good climate and physical conditions.” There are certain challenges inherent in climbing South Col, the most notable being the famous steps located on the Northeast Ridge. There are three steps guarding the summit of Everest. These rock cliffs vary in height and exposure on both the first and the second step which makes these obstacles daunting at extreme altitudes. In addition to becoming the first Sri Lankan to reach summit Mera Peak, he accompanied Earthwatch Research Institute to the Arctic Circle in 2006 to conduct research on climate change. Yes FM has come forward as the Electronic Media sponsor and will be giving regular live updates on Elmo’s journey over the next 35 days.
