Surf’s up as entries open for the third consecutive Arugam Bay Surf Classic this year. Surfers from all around Sri Lanka have the opportunity to take part in the only national surf competition scheduled to take place from 25 to 27 July. Gracing this year’s event will be the previous long board world champion Wayne Deane. Surfers island-wide can now apply for the competition to be held at the world-famous Main Point in Arugam Bay.
“We are committed to making the Arugam Bay Surf Classic one of the region’s most sought after surf competitions. To help us achieve this, we have engaged qualified international class surfers from Australia as consultants. We truly believe that the sport of surfing can both enhance the quality of life in Arugum Bay and also help bring attention to the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka,” said Ajai Singh, Head of Organising Committee of Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2013.
Since its inception in 2011, the Arugam Bay Surf Classic has progressively grown in its popularity, drawing in participation from around the island and from surfers across the globe. Organised by Arugam Bay Beachwear in association with the local Arugam Bay Surf Club, the competition aims to standardise and create an identity for the sport of surfing in Sri Lanka, while creating an arena of opportunity for local surfers.
While growing the local industries of the area, the not-to-be-missed event adds to the development of the local tourism industry, making Sri Lanka a destination for surfers. Land Rover Defender partners with the event, bringing focus to the beach and sun along with Wine World, the lifestyle beverage partner of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2013. Arugam Bay Beachwear along with the partners aims to make the Arugam Bay Surf Classic a regional class surf contest.
Krishantha Ariyasena, Head of Arugam Bay Surf Club, added: “We are very pleased that the Arugam Bay Surf Classic is getting better every year, it really supports the sport of surfing in Arugam Bay and in Sri Lanka.”
The Arugam Bay Surf Classic provides an effective platform for surfers island-wide vying for the title as Sri Lanka’s top surfer. This year, two days from the competition will be allocated to Sri Lankan surfers with one day open for international surfers from which the top 10 surfer rankings in the country will be adjudged. Currently, Asanka, the winner from the Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2012, is Sri Lanka’s top surfer with Prenith in second place and Cyril in third place.
