The Royal Colombo Golf Club’s (RCGC’s) efforts to identify and groom young golfing talent has received corporate support from First Capital Holdings PLC, which has come forward to sponsor the Club’s Junior Golf Clinic.
More than 65 young golfers aged 5 to 17 years are currently in training and the next term is scheduled to commence on 6 September 2013. Each training term spans 12 to 15 weeks.
“As in most sports, starting young is a key to acquiring the skills needed to become a good golf player,” First Capital’s CEO Jehaan Ismail said. “Golf is extremely popular among our clients, and First Capital is delighted to support this important initiative of the RCGC which will enable Sri Lanka’s junior golfers to develop their skills to take on the best internationally.”
“The RCGC’s Junior Golf Clinic has helped many youngsters since it began 28 years ago, and we are hopeful that our support will contribute to a revival in interest in the game at the schools level,” Ismail added.
Alongside the Junior Golf Clinic, the RCGC has an ongoing Talent Identification Program that has to date provided an opportunity for about 950 schoolchildren to try their hand at playing golf. The Club intends extending this exposure to another 1,100 students, and thereafter to select 20 of the best for a 10 year sponsored training program which could lead to eventual inclusion in the national squad.
