Former Kandy SC player Hafiz Marrikar appointed Kandy Club Secretary

By Shamseer Jaleel Kandy Club’s 137th Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place recently with the appointment of B.D.R. Suri Rajan as President, Hafiz Marikar as Secretary and Srilal Wickremaratne as Treasurer. Kandy Club with a long standing history was formed in 1877 by then planters and military men.  It started with sports activities like boating, billiards, snooker and table tennis and was also famous for dancing. In 1999 the club celebrated 125 years under the presidency of Roy de Silva and the new rooms came up, which are today giving the club a big hand. All the development and promotional activities are mainly due to the able committee members, headed by B.D.R. Suri Rajan as President, who was elected for another term due to his ability to get the fullest support from the Committee and its members. His next aim is to install a swimming pool. This time his Vice President is the former Secretary K.M.R. Kulatunga and the former Vice President Hafiz Marikar has come in as the new Secretary, with veteran Sri Lal Wickremarathne as the Treasurer. Two former Secretaries who gave a big hand to the club, Iswan Omar and Dudley Guantilake, were elected as Trustees. The committee members compromises Lucien Rajakarunanayake, S.M.S. Samarakoon,  Rohan de Silva, Lionel Herath, V. Athimoolam, Anura Widanagamage, Damika Suwarnasinghe and Randy Maclaud, all of whom served in the last committee; the newcomers are Simon Weerasuriya and Russell T. Jayatilake, who were in the committee earlier and have come back, together with S. Thilakaswaran, Vishwanath  Wijayasinghe (Manager) and  R.L.S. Samarakoon (Club Development Manager).
