Kandy, Navy, Havelocks and CR&FC are leading the way at the inter-club league rugby championship this year. As of now all four teams have dropped only a single game and are all in the hunt for the club rugby plum this year. Unlike in other years, this season is not a one-horse race and the gap between the top four teams is almost non-existent. CR&FC, led by Ashan Costa, will be among the strongest teams in the running for the club league title this year around. They are coached by Imthisam Marrikar, who possesses a vast knowledge of the game as well as overseas experience. The former Trinity winger played for Tyrelle Rajapakse’s champion outfit in 1987 which remained unbeaten during the season as well as in the knockout tournament. More than anything Imthi has brought lots of discipline to the Red Shirts this year. He is a firm believer in always giving an opportunity to the most deserving player. CR will host Police today. CR dropped only one game against the Sailors two weeks ago by a narrow margin (26-30). They have some talented players such as Kanchana Ramanayake, Ashan Costa, Dilan De Zoysa, Robbie Malneek and Puppy Farrel. The last two players from New Zealand have shown their class for CR this season. Norman Williams from UAE will referee this game. The Police outfit is led by Hashan Gomez and holds top players such as Romesh Arachige, Apisi Naqaliya (Fiji Sevens player) and a few more quality members to boost their chances. Police are guided by former Sri Lankan prop forward Hafeez Marso, who has done a remarkable job keeping the cops up to speed. Kandy, who staged a remarkable comeback against Havies two weeks ago, ended Navy’s unbeaten run at Welisara last weekend. They will travel to Beliatta to play the Hambantota Sharks. Kandy should have things their own way with some outstanding players in their rank such as Anurudha Wilwara, Fazil Marija, Lavanga Perera, Nigel Perera, Chirsh Cloette and Oscar Ouma. Their game will take place on November 30 and will be officiated by Dinka Peiris. Havies will lock horns with Sri Lanka Air Force at Ratmalana today. The Park club, who possess some outstanding national players such as Sudharshan Muthuthanthri, Danushka Ranjan, Sandun Herath, Shehan Pathirana and Anura Walpola, is a side with more than a slim hope of clinching the league championship this year. Priyantha Gunaratne will referee the game.
