Royal fresher Randev Pathirana has emerged as the best all-rounder in the College’s First XI team in the current season, with consistent performances with bat and ball in the inter-school matches leading up to the 2014 ‘Battle of the Blues.’ The left-handed batsman, who bowls right arm off spin, is the highest run scorer for Royal College in the 2013-2014 season, having scored 868 runs by the end of February. He has made six half centuries and a century (111) against De Mazenod College, Kandana, at an average of 48.22 in 14 matches. As a bowler, Randev is the second highest wicket taker for the Royal College this season with 33 wickets in 154.1 overs of which 42 were maidens. He has conceded just 402 runs, achieving a bowling average of 12.18 and an economy rate of 2.6. Pathirana played a pivotal role in Royal College’s defeat of Trinity with a match bag of eight wickets, taking 5 for 23 in the first innings and 3 for 55 in the second. His two stunning catches at cover point provided the breakthrough to dismiss the opening pair and set in motion the collapse of Trinity’s 2nd innings. He is one of the players to watch when Royal take on arch rivals S. Thomas’ College at the 135th Royal Thomian encounter at SSC on 13-15 March.
