MUNICH (AFP): Bayern Munich Chief Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in an interview published on Wednesday that the German Super Cup could be played in Asia from as early as next season.
“We have had discussions with the DFL (German football league),” the former Germany striker was quoted as saying on the online edition of the sports weekly Sport Bild.
“It (playing the Super Cup in Asia) is now on their agenda. If the executive committee makes a decision, it could be done in theory from next year.”The annual pre-season German Super Cup sees the winner of the Bundesliga take on the winner of the German Cup.
At the start of August, Rummenigge said he thought it was possible to organise the match in China, although some Bundesliga clubs expressed doubts about the benefits of transferring the Super Cup out of Germany. This year’s edition on August 12 saw Bayern Munich, runners-up in the league last season, beat Bundesliga champions and cup holders Dortmund 2-1.
