Hayleys Group down at 96 for 7, rose like the phoenix riding on the hurricane 108 ball, 146 runs, inclusive of 15 sixes and 10 fours by Maduranga Soysa, to finish with 283 in 46.2 overs and win the match by 85 runs against Seylan Bank in the ongoing “MIDS” Trophy, MCA “B” division League Tournament 2017, continued last weekend.
The brave Soysa jelled with No. 9 batsman, Ali Khan (43) as they put on 130 runs in 125 balls for the eighth wicket.
Hayleys leg spinner Ravindu Wijeratne inspired by Soysa’s herculean effort, bowled his heart out to put the brakes on the experienced Seylan Bank batting line up to finish with 05 for 21 in 9.4 overs, two of them being maidens, getting them all out for 198 runs under 42 overs; the half centuries of Kanchana Gunawardena (67) and Tharanga Paranavitana (55) thus went a begging for the bankers.
There were fireworks in broadday light at Army Grounds, Mattegoda, lit up by Lakshan Rodrigo (127 in 78 balls inclusive of four sixes and 18 fours) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (89 in 59 balls, inclusive of four sixes and 10 fours), the pair engaged in a 225 runs opening stand, as LBF amassed to 385 in 48 overs, thus thrashing PABC Bank “A” by a massive margin of 199 runs.
A well-compiled 2nd wicket stand of 115 runs in 119 balls between Pathum Wickramarachchi (77 in 79 balls, inclusive of four sixes and four fours) and Imal Liyanage (45) gave Singer SL “A” their first win, after two defeats, beating Commercial Bank “A” by four wickets; thus the bankers crashed to their fourth defeat on the trot and failed to advance to the second round.
Left arm, leg spinner Lakshan Jayasinghe’s impressive bowling effort (8-34-5) did not bear fruit for Mobitel, as Kanrich Finance “A” spinner Alankara Asanka (4 for 35) spun a deadly web around them to get them all out for 185 runs under 40 overs, to gain a 54 run win.
PABC Bank “A” engaged in a double header had to suffer back to back defeats, losing to MAS Silueta by 90 runs; PABC with no wins, thus became the 2nd team to bow-out from the tournament.
