Thanks to the generosity of Hemas Southern Hospital, a student of Southland College, Galle will participate at the Asian Badminton Tournament to be held in Japan this week. She is 13-year old Kavindika Binari de Silva, a talented player who was selected by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association to represent Sri Lanka in the tournament.

A donation of Rs 100,000 was made by Hemas Southern Hospital to cover her expenses and the cheque was handed over by the Chief Operation Officer, Dr. Sajeeva Narangoda.

Commenting on the donation, Dr Narangoda said that as a leading private hospital, their policy is to encourage sports and physical activities in the quest to build a healthier nation. “Today the tendency is for the younger generation and the parents to pay more attention to passing examinations rather than participate in sports activities. In an era where students do not take sports seriously, Kavindika Binari is a very good example for balancing sports with her studies,” he said.

“I wish Kavindika all the very best and hope she will play well in Japan and bring glory to her motherland and school,” he added.

Kavindika has participated in many national level tournaments and won awards. Taking part in a tournament in Singapore, she won the 3rd place –in an Under-11 event.
