Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera, Beruwala wins Travel Trade Softball Cricket Sixes

Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera, Beruwala and Amaya Lake Dambulla emerged as the new men’s and women’s champions at the 39th Travel Trade Sports Club Softball Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament 2016 - sponsored by Aitken Spence Travels - which concluded at Shalika grounds on Sunday.

Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera, an Aitken Spence hotel, beat Amaya Lake Dambulla in the men’s final while Amaya Lake, Dambulla beat their sister hotel, defending champs Amaya Hills, Kandy in the women’s final. 

35 men’s and six women’s teams took part in the tournament, which was once again sponsored by      Aitken Spence Travels.  

On their way to the final Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera, Beruwela beat Walkers Tours, Waters Edge, Hemas Travels (quarterfinals) and Hikka Tranz (semi-finals).

The Beruwela team was given a big fright by Hikka Tranz in the semi-finals when their match ended in a tie, but they won the wicketkeepers contest comfortably with two balls to spare.

On their way to the final Amaya Lake, Dambulla beat Paradise Beach Hotel, Negombo, Amaya Hills, Kandy, Citrus Leisure (quarterfinals) and Club Bentota (semi-finals).

The Dambulla team was given a big scare by Citrus Leisure in the quarterfinals when their match ended in a tie. They edged through by two runs, winning the wicketkeepers contest.

2015 winners Jetwing Sea Negombo lost to Cinnamon Grand Colombo in the quarterfinal stage and the 2015 runners-up Camelot Beach Hotel, Negombo lost to Avani Kalutara in the second round.

The women’s final was a repeat of last year as Amaya Hills, Kandy (2015 winner) entered the final after beating Luxe Asia and Waters Edge while Amaya Lake Dambulla (2015 runners-up) entered the final after getting past newcomers Ceylon Roots and Aitken Spence Travels. 

Men’s results from quarterfinals onwards     

Quarterfinals: Cinnamon Grand Colombo 82/3 (5.0) lost to Hikka Tranz 83/4 (5.0); Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera 104/5 (5.0) beat Hemas Travels 42/6 (4.4); Amaya Lake, Dambulla beat Citrus Leisure in the W/K’s contest as the match ended in a tie (both teams scoring 96 runs each); Exotic Holidays 31/6 (4.1) lost to Club Bentota 34/3 (2.4)

Semi-finals: Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera beat Hikka Tranz in the W/K’s contest (both teams scoring 65 runs each); Amaya Lake, Dambulla 80/4 (5.0) beat Club Bentota 75/5 (5.0)

Final : Amaya Lanka, Dambulla 53/6 (5.0)  ( M. Menaka 21,  Amith Sudarshana 1/25,   Akila de Silva 2/9,  Jihan Shanith 1/0) lost to Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedera 54/4 (4.0)  (Amith Sudarshana 27,   Tharindu Sampath 17,   Rohitha Attampawala 2/14, M. Menaka 2/7)
