Hewitt, Tomic hit form for Wimbledon

AAP: Up until last week, all the signs were pointing towards another dismal campaign for Australia’s men at Wimbledon in 2013. But a timely return to form for Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic has things suddenly looking up for a male-heavy Australian contingent heading into the grass-court grand slam, starting on Monday. While only one Australian woman - 14th seed Samantha Stosur - will contest the singles for the first time since 1950, it is the nation’s

largest men’s singles contingent in a decade. Realistically, none are likely to challenge big guns Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal for the title. But Australia’s men head into the event with strength in numbers and form as they attempt to rebound from their worst showing at Wimbledon since 1938 last year, when no Australian man reached the second round. Despite a year marred by injury and the drama surrounding his father and coach John, world No.64 Tomic reached the quarter-finals at Eastbourne this week before a tight loss to French second seed Gilles Simon. It followed 32-year-old Hewitt’s eye-catching run to the Queen’s Club semi-finals last week and both unseeded players loom as serious danger men in the draw.
