HNB celebrates victorious milestone of National Women’s Rugby

HNB Assurance the travel partner of the Women’s 7’s Rugby team for winning the Plate Championship

The innovative insurance solutions provider HNB Assurance is immensely proud of the stellar performance of the Sri Lanka women’s 7s team to register the highest ever position in an Asian Sevens Series. National Women’s 7’s team won the Plate Championship at the Thailand 7’s Rugby Tournament beating Singapore 17 to 5.

HNBA Assurance is honoured to have been in the background by supporting our National team in conquering this victory by being the official Travel partner for this tournament. HNBA is delighted to have been able to support this winning team who has made the country proud. This tournament of the Asian Series first leg Thailand 7’s was held on 20 and 21 September 2013 in Bangsaen, Thailand. This is the first time that HNB Assurance joined hands with the Srilankan National Women’s Rugby team as the official travel partner. Having lost two matches in the previous day Sri Lanka entered the game with some desperation to win the fifth position of the tournament and they excelled in both attack and defence with sheer determination. The National Rugby Selectors have selected the squad consisting of 12 players and five standby players to represent Sri Lanka at the above tournament. Centre three quarter Thanuja Weerakkody of Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club is the captain of the Sri Lanka women’s sevens rugby team for the Asian Rugby Football Union seven a side. National Team Head Coach Chandrishan Perera commenting on the victory said: “We selected the best final 12 member squad followed by a series of trials. I am extremely proud of Thanuja Weerakkody the captain and the entire team. This squad consists of all players from distant cities out of Colombo. It is the hard work and the dedication of these players that they have put in essence to gain this conquest. I am proud that our hard work paid off in a triumph manner and it has been an honour to coach this team.” Commenting on this success, HNB Assurance Managing Director Manjula de Silva stated: “It is the aptitude of the Sri Lankan Women’s Rugby 7’s team that has conquered this victory by winning the Plate Championship and for making our country proud.
