The winners with HNB Managing Director/CEO Jonathan Alles
The Millennium Trophy is a leading event of the local golfing calendar. Sponsored by HNB for the eighth consecutive year, it concluded recently with 205 golf enthusiasts teeing off for a variety of exciting prizes.
The tournament was open to all full members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club with a current RCGC Handicap and was worked off over 36 holes. Husni Uwais clinched the champions trophy bagging 137 points overall while Vinod Weerasinghe emerged runner up.
It proved to be a landmark year for the Millennium Trophy as the HNB Stableford Tournament was opened up to ladies for the first time in the competition’s history.
Several ladies who are full members of RCGC competed in the Silver Division, with a handicap between 0 and 20, and Bronze Division, with a handicap between 21 and 36.
Apart from the ladies competition, there was a men’s Stableford Tournament which consisted of five categories, Group A (Handicap, 0-9), Group B (Handicap, 10-18), Group C (Handicap, 19-28) seniors’ Division and Master Division.
HNB customers competed in a special category and the winner and the runner-up were awarded valuable prizes including a return air ticket to Singapore. The HNB customer event was won by Kapila Dandeniya and the runner-up was Aravind Fernando.
Ladies Silver Division – Handicap 0 to 20 winner was Louise Parson, the runner-up was Niloo Jayathilake, Bronze Division – Handicap 21 to 36 winner was Roshani Sangani and runner-up was Fran De Mel.
Group A – Handicap 0 to 09 winner was Arvind Fernando and the runner-up Mihindu Chandrasoma, Group B – Handicap 10 to 18 winner was Alex Lee Chong Pa and runner-up Johnny De Saram and Group C – Handicap 19 to 28 winner was Viran Perera and runner-up Anura Balasooriya. In the Masters Division the winner was Asitha Wijesekera and runner-up Nihal Boralessa while Nirmal Ranasinghe and A.S. Abdeen were the winner and the runner-up in the Seniors Division. The first day best Nett score winner was Alex Lee Chong Pa and the second day best Nett score winner was Ilham Reyaz.
The two day tournament concluded with a gala function in which HNB Managing Director/CEO Jonathan Alles was the Chief Guest. The inaugural Millennium Golf Trophy Tournament which was allocated the status of a board event was first conducted in 2001 to commemorate the massive refurbishment and development program undertaken for the first time at the Royal Colombo Golf Club after over a century in existence.
