HNB Millennium Trophy Golf Tournament 2016 fetes winners

The Millennium Trophy, a leading event on the local golfing calendar which was sponsored by HNB for the ninth consecutive year, concluded recently after 210 golf enthusiasts teed off at the Royal Colombo Golf Club in Colombo.  

The tournament was open to all full members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club with a current RCGC Handicap and was worked off over 36 holes.

Vinod Weerasinghe clinched the Champions’ trophy with an aggregate net score of 141 over the two days while Sachin De Silva emerged runner-up with a net score of 142 points. Weerasinghe and De Silva also were the winner and the runner-up respectively of the special awards for HNB customers.

Several ladies who were full members of the RCGC competed in the Silver Division, with a handicap between 0 and 20, and the Bronze Division, with a handicap between 21 and 36. 

Dr. Pravina Dunuwilla clinched the title with 37 points and Manori Jayakodi secured the runner-up position with 36 points.

Apart from the ladies’ competition, there was a men’s Stableford tournament which consisted of five categories - Group A (Handicap 0-9), Group B (Handicap 10-18), Group C (Handicap 19-28), Seniors Division and Masters Division.

Noordeen Sethwala won the Group A title with 36 points and Sanjeewa Wickramasinghe earned 34 points to be placed runner-up.   

The Ladies’ Bronze Division winner was Ruani Desinghe (32) while the runner-up was Kumari Herath (30).

The Group B winner was Sung Soo Jung and while the runner-up was Wasantha De Silva and the Group C winner was Erajh Gunaratne while its runner-up was Raj Aboobucker. 

In the Masters Division the winner was Nihal Wadugopitiya with the runner-up being Dr. R.S. Senatrath Yapa while Sarath Sirisena and Daya Perera were the winner and runner-up of the Seniors Division. 

The two-day tournament concluded with a gala function at which HNB Managing Director/CEO Jonathan Alles addressed the participants and guests.

The inaugural Millennium Golf Trophy Tournament, which has been allocated the status of a board event, was first conducted in 2001 to commemorate the massive refurbishment and development program undertaken for the first time at the Royal Colombo Golf Club after existing for over a century.
