The annual Royal-Thomian hockey encounter will be played for the Orville Abeynaike Memorial Trophy on 4 November from 4.15 p.m. at the S. Thomas’ College big club grounds in Mount Lavinia.
It will be the 15th occasion the match is being played for this trophy. The Thomians have won seven matches while the Royalists have won four, with three matches ending in draws. Royal College are the current holders of this trophy since they won it in 2012 and the match ended in a draw last year. The Royalist will be led this year by Shaheer Bari and the Thomians being captained by Theekshana Rajan. It will be an entertaining game of hockey as the Royalist will be intending to retain the trophy while the Thomians will have the home advantage.
The Chief Guest for the match this year will be Chandra Schaffter, who represented S. Thomas’ in both hockey and cricket in 1948/49 and is also double international, after playing for the country in the same two sports. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of Janashakthi Insurance Ltd. The Old Boys’ match will be played for the Nihal Nilaweera Memorial Trophy at 3 p.m. on the same day.
