Humiliating loss for Sri Lanka at Commonwealth Rugby 7s

By Shamseer Jaleel The Sri Lanka 7s rugby team kicked off the Commonwealth rugby sevens in Glasgow, Scotland by losing all the three games they played on the opening day, and at the time of going to press lost the Bowl Quarter final as well. Over 90,000 fans were packed in to the Ibrox Stadium on both days. In two years time sevens rugby will take centre stage at the Olympic Games in Rio. Sri Lanka opened the tournament with a game against one of the best sides in the rugby sevens this year – Australia. Sri Lanka had no chance when they were over-run by the powerful Aussie outfit by 62-7 with the only try scored by Sandun Herath. The second outing was even worse, when the England team went past a helpless Sri Lankan outfit by another half a century plus score (57-0). Their last outing was versus the African champions Uganda who edged out the Lankans in a closely fought encounter by 14-17. After being relegated to the Bowl quarter final on day two yesterday, the Lankans were edged out by Papua New Guinea 12-17. Defending Gold Medal winners from the inception of the Commonwealth rugby in Malaysia (1998) New Zealand, Kenya, Australia, Wales, Samoa, England, South Africa and Scotland qualified for the Cup quarter finals.
