Reuters: Marcel Siem won a thrilling Shanghai Masters in China on Sunday (November 2), beating Ross Fisher and Alexander Levy on the first hole of a play off.
Levy started the day as the firm favourite with a four shot lead.
But the Frenchman endured a nightmare round, carding a 78 that included six bogeys and a double bogey as he dropped five shots on the last six holes.
Siem, third overnight, also fared badly on the home stretch after reaching the turn three under par.
Five bogeys, including two at the 17th and 18th, left him with a 73 and tied for the lead with Levy and Englishman Ross Fisher at 16 under par.
After shooting a five under par 67, Fisher must have fancied his chances going into the play off, but an outrageous chip on the first play off hole handed Siem the win and a cheque for USD$1,666,600.
It was the 34-year-old German’s fourth career win and his first this season, easily dwarwfing his previous highest pay day of EUROs 525,000 back in 2012.
“I like sudden death, I won three tournaments now on sudden death, and I am really happy,” he said after the win. “It is a different pressure, I like thay pressure better in the play off than the putt I had on the 72nd hole, it is really weird, but I am super happy now.”
Meanwhile Levy said he simply hadn’t played well off after blowing his lead.
“It was a totally different course, I tried to do my best I hit a good shot at some holes, I do to try my best but if I want to win a tournament to shoot six over, the last round, it is not like that to win the tournament,” he said.
But for Fisher, second place was more than he expected at the start of the day. “Today going out 11 under, what was I, nine behind?” he said.
“You never expect to have a chance. I am thinking just go out there and shoot a good score. If it gets me top 10 that would be great and obviously to see my name crop up on the leaderboard because it was playing tough...I think I had the best round of the day by quite some margin so I can only walk away from here very, very delighted and pleased with the way I played. To have a chance to win was great unfortunately this week just wasn’t my week. But definitely positive strides and I am looking forward to Turkey and Dubai.”
