IIT shines at Moratuwa Uni badminton tournament

The badminton team of the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) clinched victory at the Men’s singles and emerged runner up at the Men’s Doubles at the recently concluded University of Moratuwa International Shuttlers’ Fest (UMISF) 2014 badminton tournament.

In a stunning display of technique and shot selection, Dilshan Kariyawasam from IIT defeated Akila Upendra from the University of Moratuwa in the Men’s Singles finals. The event which concluded last week at the University of Moratuwa included 12 teams representing nine higher education institutes. The institutes were University of Moratuwa, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya, SLIIT, SAITM, NSBM, Kotelawala Defence University, APIIT and IIT. The UMISF has been held for four consecutive years and it was the first time IIT had participated in the tournament.

IIT player Dilshan Kariyawasam previously captained his school team, Ananda College and later captained the Sri Lanka under-19 badminton team in 2010 for the World Junior Badminton Championship held in Mexico. In 2010, Dilshan went on to write his name in the record books by becoming the first Sri Lankan to record a victory at the Youth Olympics held in Singapore.
