Intense Karting at Endurance Karting Championship – Round 2

Endurance Karting Championship Round 2 was successfully completed recently with an intensely close finish as all first three teams recorded the same number of laps at the end of the three hours. The event was an F1 Style Endurance Karting Championship where the 2nd Round was held at Speed Drome Battaramulla. Eight teams participated and each team had three drivers and two pit crew members. The Endurance format drew close reference to Formula One, where teams had mandatory pit stops which the pit crew would work on the karts while three drivers took on the three-hour challenge

with driving sessions depending on the teams’ strategy. The winning team was decided by the total amount of laps achieved in the three-hour period. At round 2 same as Round 1 all eight teams included a mix of senior racing drivers ; Ashan Silva, Nadeera Jinasena, Emdad Hussain and Thiwanka Wijesekara as well as the upcoming young Formula McLarens 1300 drivers ; Devin Serasingha, Lasitha Naotunna, Charith De Zoysa, Dasun Ranathunga and Bryan Perera. For the 1st time the event was held as a Day and Night race starting at 4:30 p.m. giving the drivers a new challenge and a great picture for the spectators.

After an intense battle the race ended with the first three teams completing the race in record breaking 351 laps each. Thus as per the rules the judgers referred to the qualifying positions in order to announce the winners. The ETD Racing team consisting of drivers Dhulmith Mendis (Captain), Emdad Hussain and Thiwanka Wijesekara, was announced to be the winning team of the evening as they qualified 4th. The second place was awarded to Intek Racing Team as they qualified 5th and 3rd place was awarded to AA Racing Team due to their qualifying on 6th.

After the completion of Round 1 and Round 2 the Points Table now stand as below with a 1 point difference between the leader and the joint Second Places. The Overall champion will be decided after the completion of the 3rd round, where the team with the highest points will be crowned Speed Drome Endurance Karting Champions 2013. The Round 3 of the Championship is due to be held in end of August 2013.
